THE CROFT Rosie and Nigel Burgess have lived on Mull for 40 years and have been working the croft (an agricultural smallholding in the Highlands and Islands of Scotland) since 1990. Rosie is the fourth generation of her family to work land on the Ross of Mull. Our croft comprises 22h rough grazing land supporting a small flock of Jacob sheep and chickens. It has been managed under the Rural Stewardship Scheme increasing the diversity of wild flowers, woodland and wildlife. Guests are welcome to explore the croft and contribute to our records of the wild flowers and wildlife here. |

Rosie started our small market garden in a sheltered valley in 2006, growing the veg and fruit with no pesticides or herbicides, using primarily seaweed, compost, animal and green manures. In turn this supports a healthy population(!) of slugs and voles which are thankfully held in check by the toads, slow-worms, hedgehogs and resident pair of buzzards, passing hen harrier, kestrel and merlin. The 'Slow Food' movement here is actually 'Very Slow Food' - from 3 - 6 months from seed to the table! |

Our Gold Green Tourism Award
You may have noticed the green sticker on our Home page which reflects our principles and practices to be environmentally responsible - so important in this difficult age of pollution and climate change.
Both cottages were designed principally for energy conservation and sustainability and we encourage our guests to follow our practices while staying here and maybe even take a few ideas home. We are delighted to chat with guests about growing and alternative energy but, be warned, once started, we find it hard to stop...!
